Heady Glass

If you are new to the glass scene, then the term ‘heady glass’ is probably foreign to you. Heady glass refers to one-of-kind glass that’s crafted by extremely talented artists that are meant to consume your favorite dry material or concentrate. They take countless hours, if not days, and sometimes longer to finish a single piece. These artisans utilize only the finest materials along with hard-to-master techniques to craft their works of art. Therefore, heady glass typically costs much more than your regular, non-heady glass. If you’ve already got a couple of simple glass bongs and boring old hand pipes in your collection, maybe it’s time to up the quality with a phenomenal heady glass piece?

What is Heady Glass?

One thing that stands out whenever you take a trip to your local head shop is the amount of glass that looks identical to each other. This is mass-produced, machine-made glass that’s typically on the cheaper side of the spectrum. Which is in complete contrast to the unique, heady glass that is handmade by some of the most skilled artisans around. They utilize hard-to-master techniques and expensive materials to craft some truly awe-inspiring pieces of art. But unlike most art, heady glass isn’t meant to just sit on your shelf looking pretty. It’s meant to be used and appreciated, all the while looking absolutely gorgeous.

Why so Expensive?

As cliché as the saying may be, you do get what you pay for with most things in life. And heady glass is no different. The more intricate, colorful, and use of high-quality materials used, can raise the price of heady glass significantly. The artist behind the piece plays a large part in how expensive the piece can be as well. If they’re well-known for their top-notch work, people are then willing to pay a pretty penny to add their glass to their collection. The sheer amount of time and craftsmanship that goes into each piece is mind-boggling. And it sure is on display in the price tag of some of these phenomenal creations. The ultimate example would have to be “The Throne,” which was a collaboration between multiple talented heady glass artists with the final product being a nearly two-foot-tall bong that boasts a price tag of $1,000,000. And no, that is not a typo. A million dollars for a bong may seem excessive to most people, but the time, effort, and materials that went into the piece warrant a price of that magnitude. Now, whether someone is willing to pay that much has yet to be seen. Of course, this is the most extreme example of heady glass prices, with most coming in at around a couple hundred to ten thousand dollars. Not everyone is comfortable spending thousands of dollars on some functional glass art. But there are enough who will pay, or there wouldn’t even be a ‘heady glass industry’ to speak of.

Stand Out from the Crowd

In direct contrast to the mass-produced glass that all looks identical, every heady glass piece is 100% handmade, making each a true one-of-a-kind piece of art. If you were to look through a heady glass artist’s catalog of work, you more than likely would come across multiple pieces that appear to be identical. Although they may appear to be indistinguishable from one another, that’s rarely the case. Skilled artists typically have a ‘specialty’ that they’re known for, which is why you’ll see various similar-looking pieces in their catalog of work. Typically, every piece will feature minor differences along with different colors, so no two pieces will ever be alike. That’s where their creativity takes over by using vibrant colors and intricate designs, along with advanced glass blowing techniques to create highly sought-after glass. Hence, collectors are more than willing to fork over the cash for one of these functional pieces of art. For a great deal of collectors, the aesthetics and uniqueness of the piece take priority over functionality. But, with more heady artists merging the two elements to appeal to a wider audience, you can have the best of both worlds.
