What is a Quartz Banger?

A quartz banger, also known as a quartz nail or a quartz bucket, is vital to any dab rig setup because it must withstand the extreme temperatures involved with dabbing. And it’s far superior to titanium or a ceramic banger because of its resilience and capacity to heat up in no more than fifteen seconds. Since it’s medical-grade quartz, unlike ceramic and titanium, it’s non-absorbent and you don’t have to worry about it emitting any harmful gasses. Although it looks like glass, it’s an extremely robust form of crystal that lends itself perfectly to the dabbing experience. And thanks to its extended design, it takes the heat away from the joint, which can break due to potential heat stress. They’re available in a range of sizes, making them a simple addition to your current dab rig setup. And if flavor is a vital part of your dabbing experience (it seems to be for most people), then quartz is a no-brainer. This is especially evident when the time comes to clean, which couldn’t be any easier.

Different Types of Quartz Bangers

The recent high demand for quartz dab bangers has brought forth countless new designs from an array of talented artists. And each of these new iterations comes with its share of benefits and potential drawbacks. If we were to go over each of these and every type of quartz banger out there, this list would be considerably larger, to say the least. Instead, we picked the most popular styles to discuss; flat top, slant top, and terp slurpers.

Slant Cut

A slant cut or angle cut quartz nail, as they’re commonly referred to, is typically the go-to as far as quartz bangers for rigs are concerned. The QCB (Quave Club Banger) from Quave popularized it, which many consider to be the start of everyone’s love affair with quartz bangers. Their straightforward design features an angled cut top that doesn’t require a carb cap like other bangers for dab rigs. This slanted cut allows you to place your concentrates much more easily into the banger without any worry of harm. And as pleasing to the eye as a slant cut dab banger for rigs may be, a flat top banger will generally be more functional in most cases. However, if you’re planning on pairing a carb cap with your quartz nail, it will limit your selection due to its design. Conversely, this style of banger features less space for your concentrates, which will improve heat retention. And, on that same note, a slant-cut quartz banger’s smaller size works nicely for small and medium-sized dabs, which are fantastic for beginners.

Flat Top

To all those who prefer tasty fat rips, a flat-top quartz banger for rigs is just what the doctor ordered. Their wide design and higher quartz walls don’t just allow for near-flawless functionality, but they also provide more room for your concentrates. However, most dabbers prefer this flat top style for its heat-retention capabilities, since you can easily enjoy multiple quality rips from one single torching. The flat top design also provides a smooth seal when paired with a carb cap. And the better the seal, the bigger the vapor clouds will be. You’ll also find that these types of quartz bangers for rigs are compatible with the widest array of carb cap styles. A flat-top quartz banger also pairs well with terp balls thanks to their spherical shape. If you’re looking for a no-nonsense quartz banger that consistently delivers quality vapor, a flat-top banger is a fantastic option.

Terp Slurper

JP Toro of Toro Glass invented the terp slurper, a unique twist on the traditional bucket banger, a mere five years ago in 2017. Close to the traditional banger for rigs, the terp slurper features an additional tube that runs down to an empty tray or a skillet, as they’re often referred to. The tube has tiny slits at the bottom that allow for constant airflow. When you inhale, it creates a vacuum that will continuously percolate and push your concentrates back into the center of the banger. This is where the terp slurper garners its name, from how it sucks the concentrates in the tray into the tube through the tiny slits, creating a wicked spiraling effect. A terp slurper also boasts more surface area than your typical dab bangers for dab rigs due to its larger size, which is ideal for those who enjoy larger dabs while preserving taste and smoothness. Its bigger size also allows for the use of terp pearls, marbles, and pills for even better flavor, improved air circulation, and improved heat distribution. When you go the pearl set route, the pill will rocket up and down inside the tube covering the maximum surface area and providing unmatched low-temperature dabs.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Quartz Banger?

Now that you’re familiar with the most popular types of quartz dab bangers and what they can offer, we wanted to discuss what to look for when purchasing one. If you’re new to the dabbing scene, all the numerous terms and options available might be intimidating. Heck, not that long ago, titanium and ceramic were all the rage when it came to rig bangers. Fast-forward to the present, quartz has surpassed both ceramic and titanium in popularity. This is no surprise, seeing as how quartz preserves your dab’s flavor, boasts top-notch heat retention, and can be reheated without any worry of cracking. So, let’s briefly go over some things you’ll want to be aware of before you purchase a quartz banger.

Joint Gender

This is fairly straightforward, but if you’re not familiar with what “joint gender” refers to, we’ll take a moment to explain. Quartz rig bangers can come in two different joint gender types: male and female. If your dab rig features a male joint (AKA direct inject) then you’ll require a female banger. Conversely, if your rig has a female joint, then you’ll need a male banger. A quick rule of thumb is if the nail goes into the joint, you need a male banger. And if it slides over the joint, you’ll require a female banger. Now, what if you find a banger that’s screaming your name but has a different joint gender than your dab rig? All you have to do is purchase a male-to-male or female-to-female adapter, depending on what gender your rig boasts. You’ll also find that male joints aren’t as popular as they once were, with most rigs currently having a female, 14mm joint (more on the joint size below).

Joint Size

Now that you know what gender your dab rig has, it’s time to figure out your rig’s joint size. The three most common sizes are 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. So, if your rig features a 14mm joint, then you require a 14mm banger. You’re probably thinking, “How does one even figure out the joint size of their rig?” If you’re a glass enthusiast, you can probably identify the size simply just by looking at it. For everyone else who isn’t familiar with joint sizes, you can use the penny test to figure this out. If you have a female joint, dip the penny inside, and if you have a male joint, place it on top to determine the size. For female joints, when the penny doesn’t fit inside the penny, that’s a 10mm joint. When the penny barely fits inside, that’s a 14mm joint. And when the penny fits halfway inside the female joint, that’s an 18mm joint. For their male counterparts, when the penny is less than half the size of the joint, that’s 10mm. When the joint is just over half the size of the penny, that’s 14mm. And when the male joint is almost the same size as the penny, that’s 18mm. It’s also important to note that the size of the joint is solely up to the discretion of the glassblower who crafted the piece. And there isn’t one size that’s inherently better than the others, since they all provide the same level of quality and functionality.

Joint Angle

We’ve gone over joint gender and joint size, now it’s time to discuss joint angle. To start, the two different angles your dab rig can come in are either 45° or 90°. If your rig has a 45° joint, you need a banger with the same 45° angle. And if it boasts a 90° vertical joint, a 90° dab banger must be used. Because it won’t work if you have a 90° joint and get a 45° banger. You want your nail to be level since when it’s slanted; the heat doesn’t disperse. Using the wrong-angled banger can also be dangerous if you’re not careful. When the banger is tilted and not used as it is meant to be, your oils can spill onto the floor completely going to waste. Or even worse, if it spills onto your skin, you’ll be left with a painful reminder. On the other hand, when you have the right banger for your rig, even heat distribution and skin burns shouldn’t be an issue.

Price

Price is always a consideration whenever you want to make a purchase of any kind. So, of course, it comes into play when contemplating the purchase of a quartz banger. And just because you find a quartz nail that has a $500 price tag, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best quartz banger on the market. The more expensive rig bangers are priced high due to the craftsmanship and long hours that go into each piece. They also typically use high-quality materials, which can raise the price as well. Not to say you can’t find quality bangers for dab rigs in the lower price range. These inexpensive dab nails usually don’t feature the same aesthetics as the higher-priced rig bangers. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a cost-efficient quartz nail crafted from high-quality materials. The range of prices you’ll find can be quite wide-ranging, though. They can range anywhere from inexpensive $10 bangers for rigs, all the way up to $500. The cost of a quartz banger is determined by a variety of factors. If it’s an imported piece, the price typically tops out at around $50. If it’s a branded piece, then the price can almost double, topping out at around $80. But, when they craft the piece in the US, the price increases considerably. These are the pieces that will cost you $100+ depending on the style and brand. You’ll also want to bear in mind that if you want any accessories for your dab banger, such as the pearls and marbles we previously spoke of, those will cost extra.
