For everyone else who isn’t familiar with joint sizes, you can use the penny test to figure this out. If you have a female joint, dip the penny inside, and if you have a male joint, place it on top to determine the size. For female joints, when the penny doesn’t fit inside the penny, that’s a 10mm joint. When the penny barely fits inside, that’s a 14mm joint. And when the penny fits halfway inside the female joint, that’s an 18mm joint. For their male counterparts, when the penny is less than half the size of the joint, that’s 10mm. When the joint is just over half the size of the penny, that’s 14mm. And when the male joint is almost the same size as the penny, that’s 18mm. It’s also important to note that the size of the joint is solely up to the discretion of the glassblower who crafted the piece. And there isn’t one size that’s inherently better than the others, since they all provide the same level of quality and functionality.
Joint Angle
We’ve gone over joint gender and joint size, now it’s time to discuss joint angle. To start, the two different angles your dab rig can come in are either 45° or 90°. If your rig has a 45° joint, you need a banger with the same 45° angle. And if it boasts a 90° vertical joint, a 90° dab banger must be used. Because it won’t work if you have a 90° joint and get a 45° banger. You want your nail to be level since when it’s slanted; the heat doesn’t disperse.
